The return to contingency operations has led to a new challenge in maintaining the military surgical skillset acquired over a period of nearly two decades of enduring conflict. The United Kingdom's Defence Medical Services have anticipated this change and developed a strategy that incorporates intelligent appointment or re-appointment of surgeons within NHS Major Trauma Centres, as well as ongoing training to ensure lessons are learned and skill fade is mitigated between wars.
