Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Sharp Needle in a Haystack

Abstract

This systematic review by Carpenter and colleagues assesses clinical findings and investigations for emergency department (ED) patients with acute headache.1 Half of all subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients, those with global or focal neurological deficits, are immediately apparent. It is the patient with a new rapidly peaking headache and no other neurological findings who is difficult to identify, and likely to be helped by early management.
