Paramedic pay rate increase approved by Ala. county agency

HELFIN, Ala. — The Cleburne County Hospital Board approved a new pay scale for EMS employees.

The salary increase was approved after a survey of local ambulances services was conducted, which indicated Cleburne EMS was “in the ballpark” on its salaries, reported the Anniston Star.

The new scale includes a starting and top pay, and will bring all the salaries in line with other services. Paramedic starting pay is $12 per hour, with a cap set at $15.76. AEMT pay starts at $10.50 per hour is capped at $12.75. Driver wages start at $9 and top out at $10 per hour. Basic EMT wages start at $10 and cap at $12.31.

After two years of adjustment, employees can receive, with approval, a three percent raise each year until they reach the top pay. Once that cap is reached, employees can receive a lump sum payment of time off in lieu of raises, according to EMS Committee board member Patrick Nolen.

Initial increases will cost around $1,750, and will go into effect June 1.

“The key to this is evening the playing field with our competitors,” EMS Director Tracy Lambert said. “(Para)medics are hard to get right now.”

A decrease in paramedics available has only been aggravated by low salary, which the board unanimously approved to increase.

Paramedic Lee Bullock recalls that at one point, “the average starting class for paramedics was around 40 people; they were graduating anywhere from 25 to 30 people. The average starting class of paramedics is now in the teens. They are graduating in the single digits.”
