Bill protecting patient access to emergency medications introduced in Senate

WASHINGTON ― An amendment to the Controlled Substances Act to allow continued use of controlled substances by EMS practitioners  was introduced May 16 into the United States Senate.

The amendment, known as the Protecting Patient Access to Emergency Medications Act, would ensure that EMS employees can continue to administer controlled substances under standing orders.

"The unique nature of mobile emergency medical services is unlike other healthcare services  governed by the Controlled Substances Act in that it requires the provision of time-sensitive and mobile medical care to individuals with critical injuries and illnesses in the field and movement of such individuals to definitive care,” stated the amendment.

The NAEMT said it will continue to support the bill and amendment, in conjunction with ACEP and NAEMSP.
