Patients over the age of 65 years represent the fastest growing segment of the US population. They account for 10% to 15% of emergency department (ED) visits. They have a longer length of ED stay and undergo more laboratory and radiologic testing than younger patients. Despite these more extensive workups, the elderly account for a disproportionate number of hospital and intensive care unit admissions; they have a higher misdiagnosis rate, and they suffer a higher rate of morbidity and mortality from similar diseases than younger patients.
