Audio: 911 dispatchers save woman held against her will

SEGUIN, Texas — Two dispatchers are being hailed as heroes after saving a woman who was being held against her will.

Dispatchers received an open-line call on  Feb. 10 and heard a woman and man arguing, WFAA reported. Dispatcher Jessica Martin heard the woman say the man wanted to commit suicide and then the line disconnected.  

Martin attempted to reach the line again  after her training kicked in and she realized the woman was in danger. 

"She would hang up, and I'd call her back. We'd lose connection, or she'd hang up because he was suspicious," Martin told the news station. 

Dispatcher Denera White eventually reached the woman, and at one point pretended to be her mother. She only asked “yes” or “no” questions, ultimately leading the woman to text her.

Have faith" (Seguin Telecommunications Officer text sent to a victim who was being held against her will) On February 10, 2017, Seguin Telecommunication Officers (TCO) Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 open line call from someone traveling on IH 10 in Seguin. Patrol officers were dispatched after TCO Officer Jessica Martin could hear a man and woman arguing. While they were on the line a female could be heard saying that the male wanted to commit suicide and that she was afraid of him. Moments later, the line disconnected and Seguin TCO Martin attempted numerous times to re-contact the caller. When contact was finally made the female on the line talked to TCO Martin saying everything was "okay" and hung up. The telecommunications officers became suspicious and attempted to regain contact with the victim. Seguin officers searched the area and were unable to locate the victim. Seguin TCO’s finally regained contact with the victim and asked her a series of simple questions in order to understand where the victim was and how they could help her. It was later determined that the male was holding the victim against her will and the victim was in fear of her life, headed to the Austin area. TCO Assist. Supervisor Denera White was then able to gain just enough information from the victim to relay it to Austin area law enforcement jurisdictions. The victim's cellular provider was also contacted and able to "ping" the victim's phone, giving delayed locations. TCO’s contacted Austin Police Department and the Travis County Sheriff's Office when it was determined that the suspect and victim were traveling north on SH 130 Tollway, outside the city limits of Seguin towards Austin. While Telecommunication Assist. Supervisor White was on the line with the victim, she was able to verbally give her personal cell phone number, that way the victim could text message her. Though this was clearly not a normal practice, TCO Assist. Supervisor's quick thinking "outside of the box" was crucial in ultimately saving the victim who was clearly in danger. Amazingly, the victim managed to quickly memorize the phone number and began to text Telecommunication Assist. Supervisor White. In conjunction with Austin Police Department's air helicopter unit and the Travis County Patrol Division, the victim and male suspect were located while they were still driving. The suspect was later charged with Unlawful Restraint and identified as 41-year-old Enrique Leiner. Enrique was booked into the Travis County Jail. "On this day, like many others, the Seguin Police Department's Telecommunication's Division represented our agency's servant leadership values, extra-ordinary training, and compassion. We commend our outstanding Telecommunication Division and give thanks to Austin Police Department and the Travis County Sheriff's Office for their caring attitude and determination in solving this case," said Police Chief Kevin Kelso. -Deputy Chief B. Seguin police used a helicopter to find the man and woman, while White communicated with the woman via text message.

"They're looking for you to help. Do you see the helicopter? Hang in there. We will find you. Have faith," White told the victim in a text message.

Police located the duo and Enrique Nunez Leiner, 41, was arrested and charged with unlawful restraint, according to WFAA.

White and Martin said it was a win for the team. 

“In 15 years you see a lot, but this was a case all on its own,” Martin said.
